Miracal Pets

April 12, 2010
Just about everyone I know owns a dog. I include myself in these statistics. My Basset Hound, Claude, is now seven years old. He has comforted me through a broken elbow, a bad case of pneumonia and a whiplash. There is something about those big knowing brown eyes that makes me feel understood and cared for. This may have been my imagination. That doesn't matter. It's how I felt and others feel when they are in the presence of a loving dog.

I use Claude as a therapy dog in my private practice. He accompanies me when I work with children and some adults who enjoy dogs, but have a hard time opening up.During the sessions, Claude will sit by them on the couch and rest his head on their knee. It's amazing how my clients seem more relaxed and willing to start to talk about their real issues as they pet those floppy ears.

Research shows that people who own dogs and cats tend to live longer. This is especially true of single people. Taking care of a pet can give one, prone to depression, a reason to get up in the morning. It's amazing how many people I have met just by walking Claude. Dogs bring people together initially because they have their dogs in common. As they talk many times, they discover that they have many more things in common and a friendship is born between the dogs and their owners.

I have a client who has terminal cancer. She has less then a year to live. Having her dog by her side gives her such comfort and it has improved her quality of life. She and I both agree that her little dog keeps her alive because she has a purpose and a furry companion who needs to be cared for.

Don't Give Up

February 20, 2010
Last year I worked with a 45 year old woman who was born almost totally blind. Her legs were very deformed so she was confined to a wheel chair.

She had a determination to get what she wanted in life. For many months she talked to me about a special retreat that she dreamed about attending. It was for disabled people and she knew it would be both practical and helpful emotionally. The cost of attending was very high and she lived on a fixed income. She knew that sometimes scholarships...

It's never too late to wake up to our beauty

February 15, 2010
When I had my practice in Fresno, I worked with a gorgeous 16 year old girl. All of her features were perfect and she was a straight A student. The problem was that she did not see her intelligence and beauty. She felt like she wasn't smart or pretty enough.

I knew her parents and from talking to her mother, I could tell that she was quite narcissistic. For her to tell her daughter how pretty and smart she was would have felt like she was taking something away from her own positive qual...

Inner Child Healing

February 11, 2010
We all have parts to our personality. Have you ever had a hard time making up your mind about something and felt like you had two or three voices telling you to do different things? I'm not talking about having multiple personalities. I'm talking about being confused and unable to make up your mind about something important.

Many times when we come from families where we didn't get our needs met as children, there can be a child like part who may feel afraid or embarrassed about someth...

Breaking Up and Suicide

October 19, 2009
Breaking up with someone who you really love can be so difficult. Especially, if the other person does the breaking. I have a client who was dating a guy who was charming, good looking, a good lover, financially responsible and very intelligent. The problem was he was Bi-polar and unmedicated. He had taken many different anti-depressants over the years and he said he couldn't deal with the side effects.

When he went to the depths of his depression he would talk about suicide. He freque...
